In Bryan’s Memory: Ossining Community to Name Memorial for Boating Tragedy Victim

Today Marks One-Year Anniversary when Officials Found Westchester Resident Bryan Johnson Posthumously off of City Island

Senator Carlucci, Assemblywoman Galef Will Urge Governor Cuomo to Sign New York Boating Safety Legislation into Law

TODAY, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 26TH, 3:00PM — Senator David Carlucci, Assemblywoman Sandy Galef, and Town of Ossining officials will join together on a somber note to mark the one-year anniversary when law enforcement officials located the body of Bryan Johnson. Bryan was the victim of a foolish prank, when after a night of swimming off a boat driven by friends, he was left to fend for himself, ultimately falling victim to drowning and found off of City Island. The boat was driven by a young person not certified to operate a boat.

In the year following Bryan’s death, his family worked with Senator Carlucci and Assemblywoman Galef to pass New York’s toughest boating safety package. Their bill will soon require everyone — beginning 18 years old and under — to pass a certified boating safety course before permitted to operate a mechanically propelled vessel. With the summer season finally here, state and local officials, along with the family of Bryan Johnson, will urge Governor Cuomo to sign the landmark legislation into law. Ossining officials will also commemorate Bryan’s memory by officially renaming the Ossining Boat Ramp the Bryan J. Johnson Memorial Boat Ramp, followed by a short ceremony in his memory.
