SENATOR GREG BALL: ‘STOP AND FRISK’ SAVES LIVES AND KEEPS OUR STREETS SAFE

Albany, N.Y. – 6/05/2013 – Senator Greg Ball (R, C, I – Patterson) Chairman of the Senate Veterans, Homeland Security & Military Affairs Committee released the following statement following the Assembly passage of A6716A “an act to amend the penal law, in relation to criminal possession of marihuana in the fifth degree.”

“In a community where we have children dying from drugs and alcohol it is simply unconscionable that any legislator would even consider decriminalizing marijuana, or any dangerous drug. Marijuana is carcinogenic, addictive, destroys lives and is a proven gateway drug, now 30 times more powerful than years ago. Furthermore, knowing that the beneficial effects for medical patients is now available in both pill and vapor form, the very suggestion of Medical marijuana is a hoax and a Trojan Horse for powerful forces seeking to decriminalize all drugs. I am deeply disappointed in those legislators who voted with Shelly Silver and irresponsibly put our children’s lives and our communities in harm’s way,” said Senator Greg Ball. “The New York State Assembly has not only voted to decriminalize certain possession of marijuana, but is attempting to place a back door end to stop-and-frisk searches that have proved an invaluable tool in fighting crime. Legal and law enforcement experts agree, including New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, that stop-and-frisk saves lives and keeps our streets safe.”

“I am proud to be Sheriff of Putnam County, the safest County in New York State. I strongly believe that Stop and Frisk has been an especially important tool in high crime metropolitan areas,” said Putnam County Sheriff Don Smith. “Attempting to strip law enforcement of pivotal tools to protect our fellow New Yorkers and save lives, plain and simple flies in the face of effective law enforcement. We must always remember that our primary mission in law enforcement is to protect and keep our citizens safe.”

“Attempting to revoke a key law enforcement tool stop-and-frisk is dangerous,” said Bob Buckley, chair of Senator Ball’s Law Enforcement Advisory Council. “Any legislator interested in law enforcement procedures should ask an active or retired cop about the crime preventing, life saving operational usefulness of stop-and-frisk before they continue their dangerous meddling.”
