U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer released the following statement today in light of New York State’s decision to use HUD CDBG-Disaster Recovery funding, made available in the Sandy Supplemental bill, to cover the 25% local cost share for home buyouts. The Superstorm Sandy supplemental bill that Senator Schumer fought to pass Congress in January 2013 made it possible for funds to be used this way by allowing the use of CDBG funding for local cost shares, and by including Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee as eligible disasters.
“We included Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee in the Sandy supplemental package earlier this year, and it was for purposes just like this. The local communities hammered by these twin storms are still cash-strapped and in need of support to implement these types of programs. We’re glad the state is doing it.”
