Westchester Legislators to Hold Special Meeting to Advance Astorino’s Source of Income Legislation
White Plains, NY – A special meeting of the Westchester County Board of Legislators (BOL) has been called by BOL Chairman Ken Jenkins (D-Yonkers) for Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at 10:00 AM for the purpose of considering a resolution to set a public hearing on a Local Law submitted by County Executive Rob Astorino to amend the Laws of Westchester County, in relation to prohibiting housing discrimination based on source of income.
The public hearing would take place at the next regular meeting of the BOL on Monday, May 6, 2013.
On April 24, 2013, County Executive Astorino submitted to the BOL legislation that, when approved, will ban discrimination against potential homeowners and renters based on their source of income.
The legislation, which the BOL passed in 2010, was vetoed by Astorino. Recently, a federal judge ordered that Astorino submit the Source of Income legislation to the BOL and agree to sign it into law as part of his duties to promote the bill in regard to the stipulations of the fair and affordable housing settlement between the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and Westchester County.
“The County Executive’s Source of Income legislation, submitted to the Board last week, first needs a public hearing before it is voted on, so we are moving ahead as quickly possible to help him promote the bill and achieve full compliance with the housing settlement,” said Jenkins.
Westchester County was notified by HUD in March that it would risk having $7.4 million in 2011 Community Development Block Grant funds reallocated if Astorino failed to take steps toward promoting Source of Income legislation by April 25, 2013.
