Westchester Legislators Vice Chair Williams Honors
Famed Jazz Pianist and Educator Dr. Valerie Capers
Mount Vernon, NY – Westchester County Board of Legislators Vice Chair Lyndon Williams (D-Mount Vernon) took part in honoring famed jazz pianist and educator Dr. Valerie Capers at the PJS Jazz Society’s annual “Tribute to a Legend” concert held earlier this week at the First Presbyterian Church.
“Dr. Capers has served as a mentor and shining example of professionalism for countless young musicians over the years,” said Williams. “In honoring her here tonight, we also recognize her as a proud and serious artist able to overcome many challenges and nurture her gifts so she could fulfill her dreams while entertaining audiences around the world.”
A piano prodigy who grew up in the Bronx, Capers was the first blind graduate of the Julliard School of Music, where she received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees. She served on the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music, and from 1985 to 1997 was chair of the Department of Music and Art at Bronx Community College / CUNY, where she is now professor emeritus.
Valerie Capers has performed with her trio around the world, at colleges and universities, jazz festivals, clubs and concert halls. As an accompanist, Capers has shared the bandstand with Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis, Tito Puente, Max Roach, Mongo Santamaria, James Moody and Paquito D’Rivera, to name just a few. Renowned for intertwining jazz and classical music, Capers recently released the CD Wagner Takes the ‘A’ Train.
At the tribute concert, Capers received a County Proclamation from Williams which noted that April 14, 2013 was celebrated as “Dr. Valerie Capers Day” throughout Westchester County.
