Westchester Board of Legislators Chairman Ken Jenkins Calls for the Defense of Marriage Act to be Overturned

White Plains, NY – Westchester County Board of Legislators (BOL) Chairman Ken Jenkins (D-Yonkers) issued the following the statement today in regard to the U.S. Supreme Court’s consideration of the Defense of Marriage Act:

“It is clearly time to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act. Multitudes of community and religious leaders, media commentators and elected officials, including the President who signed it into law, are all in agreement that this misguided legislation should be struck down, and for good reason: common sense and human compassion dictates that the love between two individuals should be not defined and thus thwarted by any government.

“Our democracy is based on the enlightened understanding that all human beings are created equal and should be treated equally under the law. We cannot, as a nation, point to our democracy with pride while simultaneously sanctioning inequality. It is time to embrace a new era of true equality, with the same rights and privileges guaranteed to all, regardless of race, religious affiliation or lack thereof, gender and sexual orientation.”
