PRESS RELEASE] Yorktown kicks off 8th annual Relay for Life

YORKTOWN, NY – The motto of the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life is “the journey to end cancer starts with a single step.” This week, Yorktown officials took the first step by kicking off the town’s annual Relay for Life program.

The kickoff, which has become an annual highlight for Yorktown residents including Town Supervisor Michael Grace, as well as Justice Sal Lagonia, was held Tuesday evening at the Elks Lodge.

“As a cancer survivor I have nothing but the utmost respect and admiration for the American Cancer Society and their continued work,” Grace said. “I encourage all of Yorktown residents to come walk in support of a family member, friend or neighbor who may be facing a battle with cancer.”

The Relay for Life itself is an overnight walk. This year’s walk is set to take place on Friday, June 14th at Jack DeVito Field in Yorktown.

“As a medical professional and having had family members, including my Father who lost his life to cancer, I applaud Monica Garrigan, the volunteers and participants for putting together such a valuable event to our community,” Yorktown Councilman Terrence Murphy said. “These events give our community an opportunity to come together and show our undying support for our families, friends and neighbors.”

The 2013 event is the eighth annual Relay for Life held in Yorktown. To date, forty teams and ninety-six individuals have raised nearly twelve thousand dollars for the event.

“The Relay for Life event here in Yorktown, just like the numerous others in Westchester, is an incredible community event that allows us to honor the brave men, women and children who are affected by cancer,” Yorktown Councilman Nick Bianco said.

Relay for Life is held annual in more than 5,000 communities across the globe who share the goal of raising money and awareness in the fight against cancer. Yorktown’s event is the largest in the Tri-State Area, according to the American Cancer Society.

“Every dollar raised at this important event helps save lives,” Yorktown Councilman Dave Paganelli said. “I look forward to joining all Yorktown residents and their families at this annual event.”
