Senator Charles E. Schumer today released the following statement on President Obama’s visit to New York. Schumer traveled from Washington with the President and accompanied him on the tour.

“In every way this day was a success in moving us forward to get the necessary federal aid to New York. Senator Gillibrand and I spent close to an hour on Air Force One with the President exploring the best and most effective ways of getting maximum aid to New York. And for the President to see the damage was both comforting to victims of the storm and certainly moved the President so that he knows firsthand why aid is so important to us.”

Schumer also said the following regarding the President appointing Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shawn Donovan as the head of federal efforts to rebuild the region:

“The President’s announcement that Secretary Donovan will head up federal relief efforts is a real help to New York. Secretary Donovan is himself a New Yorker, and will know well what we need. He is one of the hardest working people in federal government and has been directed by the President to apply all of his efforts in helping us obtain all the relief possible.”
