WASHINGTON, DC—U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer (D-NY) and Barbara Boxer (D-CA) will hold a news conference call TODAY, September 27, 2012 at 1:45 pm EST to announce they have reached an agreement with the top four rental car companies in the U.S. to end the renting or selling of vehicles that have been recalled by their manufacturer.
The Senators will announce new legislation to bar the practice. The new bill will be endorsed, for the first time, by all four of the major U.S. rental car companies—Enterprise/National/Alamo, Hertz/Advantage, Avis/Budget, and Dollar/Thrifty. Together, these companies represent 93 percent of the rental car market.
The senators will also be joined by Cally Houck, the mother of two young California women—Raechel and Jacqueline Houck—who were killed in a 2004 crash caused by a safety issue with their rental car that went unfixed despite a recall by the manufacturer.
