Westchester Legislators Chairman Jenkins Honors
9/11 Victims and First Responders at Ceremony
White Plains, NY – Westchester County Board of Legislators (BOL) Chairman ken Jenkins (D-Yonkers) paid tribute to the 9/11 victims and first responders last night at a ceremony marking the 11th anniversary of the terrorist attacks. The ceremony was held at The Rising, the county’s 9/11 memorial at Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla.
Below are the remarks Chairman Jenkins delivered at the ceremony:
“On behalf of my colleagues from the Westchester County Board of Legislators, many of whom are here this evening, I want to thank you for joining us at Westchester County’s memorial as we honor the 109 county residents who perished in the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
“We come together once again stand to remember all our fallen—from heroic first-responders, who rushed into danger with only one thing in mind: saving the lives of others; to workers in and around the World Trade Center; and to those who have become ill over the years after exposure to toxic elements and materials.
“The terrorist attacks of 9/11 still seem so fresh our minds, even now—eleven years since that horrible day. A day much like today: a picture perfect September election day that juxtaposes an exercise of our great democracy against those forces of evil who wish harm upon us. The shock, agony and sorrow of this evil attack against innocent Americans are what we relive each year.
“For New Yorkers, especially, we can never forget the moment we heard the World Trade Center was a target of this terrorist attack. We can never be settled with the idea that the Twin Towers have disappeared forever from the cityscape nearby.
“There are a few things that are a part of us now and now remain constant in life: Our understanding that we can never forget the people who perished; our promise to live up to the selfless heroism exhibited by thousands of Americans on this fateful day; and our vigilance against those who aim to harm us.
“As we have watched the Freedom Tower become New York’s tallest building, let it serve as constant reminder for us to never forget the loss and sacrifice made by Americans joined together as one. We are committed to continue to support the families of those who lost loved ones on 9/11 or as a result of the terrorist attacks on 9/11. Together, we will never lose the strength and fortitude that helped us live through that horrendous day.
“Let us pray for peace and hope that it prevails in our lives to its fullest extent.”
