Urges Erie and Queens Republican Voters to

Reject Mean-Spirited Tactics

Westchester-Rockland-Sept. 12…Rye Town Supervisor and congressional candidate Joe Carvin (R-NY-17), who has spoken out against both Democrats and Republicans for inappropriate conduct and remarks made this year, today called upon voters in Queens and the Buffalo-area to reject virulently anti-gay mailers that have been used in recent days in two Republican primary campaigns.

A story about those mailers is linked here.

“The American political system is broken in part because of reprehensible campaign tactics like we are seeing this week in Buffalo and Queens,” Mr. Carvin said. “As a Republican, I am outraged and embarrassed by the tone and hurtfulness of these mailers. Republicans who favor or oppose same sex marriage should agree that these mailers are an inappropriate way to have this discussion.”

Mr. Carvin supports traditional marriage but is supportive of civil unions.

Mr. Carvin last week called out New York Democrats for remaining silent about Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver’s secretive “hush-money”payout to female victims of alleged sexual abuse. Before that, he condemned Missouri Republican U.S. Senate candidate Todd Akin for his controversial statements about rape.

“We have major challenges in the country,” Mr. Carvin said. “We are trillions of dollars in debt; our unemployment rate has exceeded 8% for 42 straight months, and more than half (54%) of recent college graduates are unemployed or under-employed. Campaigns should be talking about serious things in serious ways, not engaging in this kind of gutter politics.”

Joe Carvin was born and raised in Port Chester, NY. He graduated Cum Laude from Tulane University with a B.A. in International Relations and became a Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholar to Senegal where he was awarded an honorary degree from the United Nations Institute for Economic Planning and Development. He holds an M.B.A from New York University and an M.P.A. from Harvard University. He speaks fluent Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Wolof (a West African language). After working a number of years with Deutsche Bank he helped set up Altima Partners where he helps finance some of the largest farms in the world. Mr. Carvin lives in Rye with his wife, a non-practicing attorney, and two daughters, Keira and Rhianna who attend local public schools. His son, Michael, lives and works in New York City. Mr. Carvin refuses to accept a salary as Rye Town Supervisor.
