LATIMER THROWS WOMEN TO THE WOLVES IN ALBANY
“It is at least the third time in 18 years that Mr. Silver has
arranged these kinds of payoffs to protect his old boys network.
What more could George Latimer be waiting for?”
Westchester–September 8…Assemblyman George Latimer (D) continues to support his political boss, embattled Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver (D-Manhattan), who has repeatedly arranged secret,six-figure pay-outs to the victims of sexual transgressions by political cronies, the campaign of businessman and state senate candidate Bob Cohen (R-C-I) today noted. Mr. Latimer refuses to call upon Mr. Silver to resign as Speaker.
Mr. Silver has confessed to wrongly using taxpayer hush money in an attempt to hide the latest sex assaults from the public (grabbing someone’s crotch is assault, not harassment), but Mr. Latimer said he prefers to “await the results” of an investigation that is not looking into Mr. Silver’s role in the scandal because he already admitted what it was. Mr. Silver, with whom Mr, Latimer votes in lock step, has an undeniable pattern of working to hide sex crimes in Albany to the benefit of his political allies and to the legal detriment of the victims.
“I am aghast as a woman and as a former Albany legislative staff member that George Latimer would choose to back the old boys network over my former female colleagues in Albany who have put up with this nonsense year in and year out,” said Cohen spokeswoman Jessica Proud. “Vito Lopez is a creep whom, according to multiple female staff members, physically molested them — and Shelly Silver tried to keep that from the public and failed to report it to law enforcement. It is at least the third time over 18 years that Mr. Silver has arranged these kinds of payoffs to protect his old boys club. What more could George Latimer be waiting for?”
Ms. Proud compared these cover-ups to the terrible incidents that occurred at and around Penn State University.
“In letting Shelly Silver get away with this, George Latimer is as complicit of condoning these crimes in Albany as the Penn State administrators were of looking the other way in that indescribably awful case. If you see something, you are supposed to say something. Shelly Silver did not. He has established a clear track record of covering up these assaults, and it is extraordinarily disappointing that Mr. Latimer is planning to let him get away with it.”
