Misuse of Taxpayer Funds to Cover Up Sexual Harassment is the last Straw!

September 4, 2012; Yorktown Heights, NY – Revelations that Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver improperly used taxpayer funds to cover up a fellow Democrat’s sexual harassment problem is a stark example of how corruption and irresponsibility has infested Albany.

Indeed, if the Speaker of the Assembly fails to adhere to basic ethical guidelines, how can anyone serving the people of New York perform their duties in good conscience? Assemblyman Steve Katz therefore calls for Sheldon Silver to resign his office, effective immediately.

“How many more times has something like this happened?” asked Steve Katz. “It is common knowledge that Speaker Silver controls a 12 million dollar slush fund entitled “Miscellaneous Contractual Arrangements” and frankly, that should make us suspicious. The existence of the fund and Mr. Silver’s continued rule bending is an indictment of the continuing corruption and cronyism he enables in Albany.”

Added Katz: “Mr. Silver’s moral myopia in this sexual harassment matter is an insult to every level-headed voter – regardless of gender.”

We are well-aware that Albany is morally, ethically and functionally “broken.” Dr. Katz believes that Speaker Silver’s resignation would be the vital first step in Albany’s rehabilitation. Should Mr. Silver resign, he would set a positive example among members of the Assembly and illustrate the truth that no one is allowed to operate outside of the ethical principles we hold sacred in our government.

Dr. Steve Katz, currently serves the 99th Assembly district and is running for reelection to this seat, which has been redistricted as the 94th. One of his leading objectives has been to clean up corruption in Albany and push State Government into the 21st Century by implementing long-needed spending cuts and modern improvements in efficiency.
