SIERRA CLUB ENDORSES BOB CASTELLI AS
‘CLEAR CHOICE’ FOR 93rd A.D.
Assemblyman Robert J. Castelli (R, C – Goldens Bridge) today landed the endorsement of the Sierra Club. This endorsement comes from America’s largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization, a national group with state and local chapters throughout New York State.
“It is exceedingly rare to find a candidate like Assemblyman Bob Castelli, who is so willing to do what is right for our environment by standing up publicly to politicians in both parties, and special interests,” said Ed Berry, co-political director of the Sierra Club Atlantic Chapter’s Lower Hudson Group. “Bob Castelli is the only candidate in this race with an economic vision that connects a healthy environment with a growing economy, and who has a proven track record of creating and passing environmental legislation, from his days as a Lewisboro Town Councilman to present day in the State Assembly.”
“It is an honor to receive the endorsement of the Sierra Club which has long been known as a good steward and watchdog of our environment,” Castelli said. “Their national efforts have earned the respect of conservationists and environmentalists for decades and I am so pleased that they acknowledge and support my work as a faithful steward of our environment.”
The Sierra Club noted that Castelli is committed to preserving the integrity and full funding of the Environmental Protection Fund (EPF). This year, Castelli was instrumental in helping pass the “EPF Enhancement Act,” a new law which increases the funds deposited annually into the EPF by allocating a portion of the unclaimed nickel deposits from the Bottle Bill.
The group also said that during his short time as State Assemblyman, Castelli has worked in a nonpartisan fashion to support environmental measures such as protection of our drinking water, investing in renewable energies and green collar jobs, reducing the carbon footprint of New York’s transportation infrastructure and continuing his fight for our wetlands by tightening protected areas from 12.4 acres to one acre.
Castelli is the clear choice when it comes to environmental justice. On larger issues, Castelli has pushed for the State to adopt a zero waste philosophy, supported public purchasing requirements to promote the use of sustainable products by state agencies and public authorities, and cosponsored and passed the Solar Industry Development and Jobs Act, as well as the moratorium on hydrofracking.
“We need more people in Albany like Assemblyman Castelli, who recognize that the environment is an apolitical issue that defies party labels and party politics,” Berry said. “The Sierra Club is proud to endorse Bob Castelli, whose values make him the both the principled choice and the right choice to represent us in Albany.”
The endorsement was announced at a press conference in North White Plains. It makes Castelli the only Republican lawmaker to be endorsed by both the Sierra Club and the League of Conservation Voters in 2010 and 2012.
